Mobile Rally Spells Loss for Dega, 63-54

MOBILE, Ala. – The Talladega College men's basketball team watched a second-half lead slip away in a road Southern States Athletic Conference matchup against the University of Mobile Rams. The Tuesday night contest saw the Tornadoes take a 63-54 loss.

The Rams (14-7, 8-5 SSAC) jumped to a 4-0 lead early, but Talladega (8-13, 2-11 SSAC) responded with a 6-0 run starting with a putback layup from Ethelbert Anum. Tre Simmons hit a pair of free throws and scored on a layup of his own to put the Tornadoes up 6-4 with just over 15 minutes to go in the half.

After trading the lead back and forth, Keon Walker hit a three to give the Rams a 12-9 lead. Mobile maintained the advantage until the 9:23 mark, where Corey Sands hit a layup to tie the game 14-14 and then splashed a jumper to put Dega up 16-14. The Tornadoes pushed ahead to as much as six points, 27-21, in the first half, following a made shot from Simmons with just under three minutes to go until the break.

Demariee Jones converted an old-school three-point play to cut the score to 27-26. However, Wilfred Campbell IV hit a jumper with 48 seconds left to give Talladega College a 29-26 lead at the half.

Corien Pooh Frazier took over at the start of the second half with four consecutive points to give Mobile the team's first lead since midway through the half, 31-29. Anum responded with a layup to tie the battle again at 31-31. The Rams built a four-point lead capped by a layup from Mason Brundidge with just over 16 minutes in the second half, but Dega battled back to tie the game 35-35 in just under a minute of game action thanks to a free throw from Sands and a three-point shot from Jordan Crumbley.

After this tie, Mobile took control of the second half and built an eight-point lead, 49-41, with 11 minutes remaining in regulation. Talladega did not go quietly and used a 10-3 run capped at the 5:51 mark with a bucket from Timothy Moneyham to bring the Tornadoes within a point at 52-51. However, the Rams used an 11-3 run to close the game, put Talladega away, and handed the Tornadoes a 63-54 loss.

Anum led Dega with 13 points and eight rebounds. Campbell IV added 12.
