Women’s Hoops Drops SSAC Matchup with WCU, 59-43

TALLADEGA, Ala. – A strong start gave way to a tough loss for the Talladega College women's basketball team, who lost in a Southern States Athletic Conference contest against the William Carey University Lady Crusaders 59-43 Saturday afternoon.

Both teams battled evenly to an 8-8 tie midway through the opening quarter until Talladega (5-12, 0-11 SSAC) started to pull ahead with a tip-in from Brooklyn Talton. Amir Brown put the Tornadoes up 14-9 after layup with 3:27 to go in the quarter. The lead flip flopped between three and five points until the end of the quarter where a jumper by Shamya Loman gave Dega a 20-15 lead after the first.

Just under two minutes into the second quarter, the Tornadoes extended the lead to eight points off a made three from Bryanna Williams. However, this marked the point in the contest where WCU (13-5, 7-4 SSAC) started to take control. The Lady Crusaders battled back to tie the game at 23-23 following a layup by Jerryone Owens. Makayla Transou splashed a three to reclaim the lead briefly, but WCU scored the last four points of the quarter to take a 27-26 lead to the half.

During the third quarter, the Lady Crusaders increased the lead to 14 points thanks to a 20-7 run from WCU. The fourth was more even with William Carey winning the quarter 12-10 and led by as much as 24 points on the way to a 16-point, 59-43 win.

Transou was the only Tornado in double figures with 10 points, five assists, four rebounds and two steals. Brown finished right behind her with nine points.

Dega shot 30.5 percent (18-of-59) from the floor, 27.3 percent (6-of-22) from three and 33.3 percent (1-of-3) from the free throw line.

Kolten Blakeney was the high man for the Crusaders with 15 points. Owens finished with a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds while Madelyn Ladner finished with 10.

William Carey finished the game 48.9 percent (22-of-45) overall, 18.2 percent (2-of-11) from beyond the arc and 81.3 percent (13-of-16) at the free throw line.

Talladega College will be on the road for three-straight games starting with a trip to face the University of Mobile (Ala.) Rams. Tip-off in the SSAC matchup is set for 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.
