WCU Grabs Comeback Win against Dega

TALLADEGA, Ala. – The Talladega College men's basketball team saw a slim lead slip away in the second half on the way to a challenging 80-74 loss to the William Carey University Crusaders Saturday afternoon in Southern States Athletic Conference action.
 
Several minutes of game action went by before Emile Kazeneza broke the silence with a three-pointer with just under 18 minutes to give WCU (6-13, 2-9 SSAC) the early advantage. Corey Sands responded with a three-pointer on the next trip up the court to tie the matchup 3-3.
 
Both teams traded the lead back and forth until Javon Tatum splashed a three-point shot, and Keshawn Pegues connected on a layup to put the Tornadoes (8-11, 2-9 SSAC) up 23-18. Dega maintained a lead until under the three-minute mark, where Kazeneza tipped in two points to tie the game 27-27. Tre Simmons hit an outside shot to give the Tornadoes the lead again, 30-27, on the following possession. Talladega took a five-point lead to the half after making three from Tatum to increase the lead to 38-33.
 
Anum Ethelbert hit a layup and a free throw to give the Tornadoes their most enormous advantage of the night at 41-33. The Crusaders cut the lead to 41-40 before Sands hit another three to push the lead back to four. Willie Moody brought WCU back within one with a three of his own. After the teams traded buckets, Casey Smith hit a three-pointer to put William Carey ahead 48-46, which was the game's final lead change. The Crusaders built as much as a 13-point lead before holding off Dega for an 80-74 road win.
 
Pegues registered a double-double with 19 points and 12 rebounds. Tatum finished with 14 points and three assists, while Jordan Crumbley scored 11.
 
The Tornadoes shot 50 percent (23-of-46) from the floor, 62.5 percent (10-of-16) beyond the arc, and 72 percent (18-of-25) at the free throw line.
 
Earl Smith had an overwhelming performance with 30 points, seven rebounds, and two assists. Willy Moody scored 17, and Smith added 14.
 
Talladega College will be on the road for three-straight games, starting with a trip to face the University of Mobile (Ala.) Rams. Tip-off in the SSAC matchup is set for 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
