Men’s Hoops Falls Short against BMC, 57-45

TALLADEGA, Ala. – It was a back-and-forth contest for most of the game, but the Talladega College men's basketball team hit a wall offensively in a 57-45 loss to the Blue Mountain Christian University Toppers Thursday night in Southern Sports Athletic Conference action.

The Tornadoes (8-11, 2-9 SSAC) sprinted to a 5-0 lead capped by a dunk in transition by Keshawn Pegues. It was under 16 minutes when Jondarius Warren hit a pair of free throws to get BMC (11-7, 5-6 SSAC) on the board. Corey Sands hit a three, and Timothy Moneyham connected on two free throws split by a layup from Ikechi Ajukwa to bring the score to 12-4 with 10:14 to go.

The Toppers started to battle back and worked to a 15-15 tie after a pair of free throws by Jamarcus Clark. Ethelbert connected on a tip-in to reclaim the lead for Talladega, and free throws from Wilfred Campbell IV pushed the lead to 19-15 just over four minutes before the half. Warren knocked down a layup, and BMC used free throws capped by Cole McGrath with no time left. Blue Mountain College led 20-19 at the half.

With 17 minutes left in the game, Darien Newchurch hit a three to put the Toppers up five, 26-21. The Tornadoes mounted another run to take a 28-27 lead after Ethelbert knocked down a couple of free throws, and the run continued un Dega took a 34-27 advantage when Ethelbert converted an old-school three-point play.

However, Blue Mountain regained control and took the final lead change at the 8:32 mark after three by Tariq Meredith. The Toppers built a 12-point lead on three separate occasions, with 13 seconds to reach the 57-45 final tally.

Anum turned in a solid effort with 14 points and nine rebounds. Sands also reached double figures thanks to 12 points and added seven rebounds.

Ten different Toppers scored; Clark was the only one to score in double-digits with 17 points, nine rebounds and four assists.

The Crusaders fell heartbreakingly to Stillman College, 83-82, Thursday night in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Talladega College returns to action in the Dr. Billy C. Hawkins Student Activity Center Saturday afternoon in SSAC action against William Carey University. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
