Early Troubles Lead to Tornado Loss against BMC, 76-70

TALLADEGA, Ala. – The Talladega College women's basketball team dug an early hole and could not recover in a 76-70 loss to the Blue Mountain Christian University Lady Toppers Thursday night in Southern States Athletic Conference action.

Shamya Loman scored the first points of the game with just under nine minutes in the first following a steal by Makayla Transou. Crystin Guy tied the contest with the layup on the following possession. BMC (10-8, 3-7 SSAC) used the momentum to build a 7-2 advantage after a layup from Julia Nicholson. The Lady Toppers built a six-point lead before Dega (5-11, 0-10 SSAC) responded to tie the game 12-12 off a tip-in by Loman with just over three minutes left in the first. Blue Mountain quickly extended to a five-point cushion and settled for a 21-17 lead after 10 minutes of competition.

The second quarter saw the Tornadoes' offense stall as BMC dominated the period with a 26-9 run in the quarter, including two separate instances of 21-point leads. The last such time came with the clock expiring going into the half after a three from Charmen Taylor put the Lady Toppers up 47-26.

Blue Mountain maintained a double-digit lead throughout the third quarter until Je'Nya Wilder hit a layup with 56 seconds remaining to bring the score to 54-46. Rebecca Walter quickly responded with a layup of her to put BMC back up by 10. However, Amir Brown put in a layup with 22 seconds left to bring the score to 56-48 after three quarters.

Dega cut the lead down to one in the fourth after a tip-in from Wilder at 8:18 to make the score 56-55. A three from Taylor pushed the lead back to four on the next possession. Wilder took a steal and connected on a layup with just over six minutes left to move the score to 61-59. This margin was the closest the Tornadoes got as the Lady Toppers kept their distance on the way to a 76-70 victory.

Five Talladega players scored in double figures, led by 17 points from Loman. Transou posted 15 points, three rebounds, and three assists; Wilder contributed 12 points and six rebounds; Brown added 11; and Brooklyn Talton finished with 10 points and led Dega on the boards with 11 rebounds.
