Dega Rally Falls Short in Win for MGA

COCHRAN, Ga. – The Talladega College men's basketball team fell behind early and tried for one more come-from-behind rally this season. However, the Middle Georgia State University Knights held back the Tornadoes on the way to a 69-64 victory in Southern States Athletic Conference action Monday evening.

The Tornadoes (8-10, 2-8 SSAC) trailed by 12 entering the second half before Ethelbert Anum hit a free throw to put Talladega within 11 in the opening seconds. Maliek Sadler quickly responded with a three to put MGA (8-8, 4-6 SSAC) up by 14, 41-27, with 19:04 on the game clock.

A methodical rally began for Dega as the team outscored the Knights 29-15 for the next 15 minutes of game time to get the score to 56-56 following a jumper from Javon Tatum. N'Kyzie Hawkins connected on a jumper to give Middle Georgia a 58-56 lead, but Ethelbert hit a jumper and finished the three-point with a free throw to give the Tornadoes their first lead of the night.

Brice Martin connected on a pair of free throws and gave MGA the final lead change of the evening at 60-59 with 3:23 remaining. From there, the Knights built as much as a seven-point advantage on the way to the five-point, 69-64 victory.

Middle Georgia sprinted to a 7-1 lead to start the game before Wilfred Campbell IV hit a three to give the Tornadoes their first made bucket at the game just under two minutes into the first half. Keshawn Pegues dunked to bring Dega within a bucket. The Knights took control from here and pushed to a 38-26 advantage at the half.

Pegues led Talladega with 22 points, seven rebounds, and four steals. Tatum added 10 points, two steals, and an assist.

Dega finished 46.3 percent (25-of-54) from the floor, 10 percent (1-of-10) from three, and 68.4 percent (13-of-19) at the free throw line.

Pierles Brown finished with 20 points for MGA, while Sadler scored 13.

Talladega College returns to action Thursday in the Dr. Billy C. Hawkins Student Activity Center against Blue Mountain Christian University. The SSAC matchup is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off.
