Second Half Rally Falls Short for Dega against DSC, 67-56

TALLADEGA, Ala. – The Talladega College men's basketball team battled back from down double-digits, but the Dalton State College Roadrunners pulled away to take a 67-56 win Saturday in Southern States Athletic Conference action in the Dr. Billy C. Hawkins Student Activity Center.
 
Dega (8-9, 2-7 SSAC) trailed by nine entering the second half when Keshawn Pegues dunked in the opening minute to put to tighten the gap to 25-18. Jacquez Fountain splashed a three-pointer to give Dalton State (10-7, 5-4 SSAC) a 28-18 advantage 10 seconds later. 
 
The made shot by DSC gave way to a 16-3 run spanning over five minutes of game action by Talladega, which led to the game being tied 33-33 with 13:07 to go off a successful three from Wilfred Campbell IV. Dega then took its first lead after Timothy Moneyham hit a free throw as the team took a 34-33 lead.
 
Sean Cobb hit a jumper to regain the lead for the Roadrunners, who built a six-point lead with just over 10 minutes remaining. However, the Tornadoes would not give up as the team cut the lead to 42-41 after a pair of free throws from Corey Sands. DSC pushed ahead to a three-point lead again, but Sands tied the game one last time at 44-44 with a three-pointer.
 
Following the tie, Dalton State earned two successful free throws from Franklin Almonte and controlled the game for the remaining eight minutes of action on the way to the 67-56 victory.
 
Pegues led the way for the Tornadoes with 15 points and six rebounds. Sands added 10 points and a team-leading eight rebounds and two assists. Ethelbert Anum scored 10 points and grabbed a pair of rebounds. 
 
Talladega shot 36 percent (18-of-50) from the floor, 28.6 percent (4-of-14) from three, and 59.3 percent (16-of-24) from the line. The team turned 12 turnovers from the Roadrunners into 16 points, scored 26 points in the paint, and converted 16 second-chance points. 
 
Almonte led a balanced scoring effort from DSC with 12 points in a reserve role. Cobb and Fountain both scored 11. 
 
DSC finished 45.8 percent (22-of-48) overall, 35 percent (7-of-20) from behind the arc, and 88.9 percent (16-of-18) at the free throw line. Dalton State scored 11 points from 13 turnovers from Dega, tallied 30 points in the paint, connected on eight second-chance points, and received a considerable boost from the bench with 30 points from reserves. 
 
Talladega College returns to action Monday in a road SSAC game in Cochran, Georgia, against Middle Georgia State University, with tip-off set for 6:30 p.m. CDT.
