Women’s Hoops Fall at Home to UTS

TALLADEGA, Ala. – The Talladega College women's basketball team started slowly and never recovered as the University of Tennessee Southern Warhawks pushed to a 65-39 win Saturday afternoon in Southern States Athletic Conference competition.

UTS (5-8, 2-7 SSAC) registered the first seven points of the contest before the Tornadoes (4-7, 0-6 SSAC) scored on a jumper from Shamya Loman with 6:50 to go in the opening quarter. The Warhawks went on to push to a 12-point advantage by the end of the period when Destiny Newman hit a jumper with 16 seconds left to put Tennessee Southern up 18-6.

It was more of the same in the second quarter for UTS, as the visitors led by double digits throughout the period. A layup by Amir Brown cut the Warhawks' lead to 11 at the 4:43 mark before the half to pull Dega to 24-13. However, Tennessee Southern responded with a 10-1 run to close the second and take a 34-14 lead to the locker room.

Talladega outscored the visitors 13-11 in the third, but Tennessee Southern closed the game strong with a 20-12 effort in the fourth quarter on the way to the 65-39 conference win.

Loman was the only Tornado to reach double figures with 12 points, seven rebounds, three steals and an assist. Brooklyn Talton snatched 12 rebounds and had four steals, two points and a block. Je'Nya Wilder matched Talton with four steals.

Dega shot 21.7 percent (13-of-60) from the floor, 12.5 percent (2-of-16) from beyond the arc, and 57.9 percent (11-of-19) at the free throw line.

Tennessee Southern performed well in the hustle metrics and turned 18 Tornado turnovers into 23 points, while 24 miscues from UTS converted into 16 points for Talladega. The Warhawks bench outscored Dega's, 24-12, won in points in the paint, 34-12, second chance points, 13-8, and in fast break points, 10-2.

Four Warhawks scored in double figures, led by Takiyah Goff with 17 points. Sydney Cooper, Mary Mackie and Destiny Newman all scored 11 points.

UTS finished the game 59 percent (25-of-51) overall, 33.3 percent (6-of-18) from three, and 75 percent (9-of-12) from the line.

Talladega College takes the court for the first time in 2023 on Jan. 3 as part of a women's and men's doubleheader with Brewton-Parker College. The Southern States Athletic Conference matchup is scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off in the Dr. Billy C. Hawkins Student Activity Center.
