Pegues Beats the Buzzer to Douse the Fire

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Keshawn Pegues called game with a second to spare to lift the Talladega College men's basketball team to a 66-64 victory over the Southeastern University Fire Friday night to conclude the SSAC-Sun Challenge hosted by Faulkner University. 
 
The shot by the 6-foot-4 native of Davenport, Iowa, capped an incredible double-double effort with 16 points and 10 rebounds, alongside two steals and a block.
 
The win marked the third consecutive victory for the Tornadoes and evened the overall season record at 7-7.
 
Coming out of halftime, Talladega was able to build a nine-point lead three different times, including at the 11:19 mark, where a Tre Simmons three-ball pushed the Tornadoes to a 50-41 lead.
 
Following the bucket, SEU (7-10) ignited for a 15-2 run capped by a Reggie Mesidor three with 5:36 on the clock to extend the Fire's first lead since midway through the first half at 56-52
 
Talladega responded with buckets from Javon Tatum and Pegues, alongside a made free throw from Ethelbert Anum, to take a 57-56 lead with 2:25 to go. After a brief tie, Anum scored once more to put Dega up 59-57.
 
Talladega pushed the lead to 63-59 following a pair of free throws from Wilfred Campbell, but SEU would not go quietly and mounted a mini comeback to tie the contest at 64-64 after a bucket from Mesidor with 12 seconds to spare. However, the last-second Pegues shot closed the door as the Tornadoes grabbed the 66-64 win in a thriller.
 
Tatum scored 16 points and added five steals to help lead Dega to victory.
 
The Tornadoes posted a .533 (24-of-45) shooting percentage and shot 61.5 percent (8-of-13) from three. The team also finished 62.5 percent (10-of-16) at the free-throw line. 
 
Dega turned 18 turnovers by the Fire into 21 points, and by contrast, SEU took 16 turnovers from the Tornadoes and scored 12 points from the mistakes. 
 
The first half started in favor of SEU as the Fire started with and scored the game's first five points. However, Talladega responded with a 9-3 run capped by a three from Corey Sands at the 13:51 mark to take a 9-8 lead.
 
Both teams traded the lead until a Sands three-pointer at 11:23 pushed the score to 14-12 in favor of the Tornadoes. The shot gave Dega the lead for the remainder of the first half. Talladega led by as much as eight points on three separate occasions during the stretch, but a shot from Joshua Blazquez allowed SEU to cut the margin to six as Fire trailed 33-27 going into the locker room. 
 
Riley Minix led all scorers with 22 points, 10 rebounds, three assists, two blocks and a steal. Mesidor finished behind him with 21, and Joshua Blazquez added 11 points. 
 
The Fire shot 44.7 percent (21-of-27) from the floor, 28.6 percent (6-of-21) from three, and 76.2 percent (16-of-21) at the free throw line. 
 
Talladega College takes the court for the first time in 2023 on Jan. 3 as part of a women's and men's doubleheader with Brewton-Parker College. The Southern States Athletic Conference matchup is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off in the Dr. Billy C. Hawkins Student Activity Center.
