Dega Dominant in Win over BPC

TALLADEGA, Ala. – The Talladega College men's basketball only trailed briefly but was primarily unmatched on the way to an impressive 79-51 victory over the Brewton-Parker College Barons Tuesday night in Southern States Athletic Conference action. 
 
The win marked the fourth straight for the Tornadoes and put the squad over .500 on the season with an 8-7 overall record and a 2-5 mark in SSAC competition. 
 
Dega opened the game on a 10-0 run capped by a three-pointer from Javon Tatum at the 15:06 mark.
 
BPC finally got on the board with a three from Robert Hardy with 14:48 on the first half clock, which was the start of a 14-2 run bookended by another three-pointer from Hardy to put Brewton-Parker up 14-12 with 10:55 to go. 
 
Timothy Moneyham hit a layup to tie the game, and Corey Sands drained a shot from outside to put the Tornadoes up 17-14 with 10:26 on the clock. The lead change served as the final time Dega trailed in the game as the team went on to build a 20-point lead at the half when Wilford Campbell IV drained a three to put the team up 44-24 after 20 minutes of play.
 
It was more of the same in the second half, as Brewton-Parker never came within more than 16 points. Tatum put the Barons down for good with a successful three-pointer with 34 seconds left to secure the 28-point, 79-51 conference win.
 
Four Tornadoes finished in double figures, led by Keshawn Pegues, who posted a double-double of 20 points and 12 rebounds. Sands totaled 13 points, three steals, and two assists. Ethelbert Anum added 12 points, which included a 10-of-13 effort from the free throw line, six rebounds, and three steals. Tatum posted 10 points and four rebounds. 
 
Dega finished 47.9 percent (23-of-48) from the floor, 53.8 percent (7-of-13) beyond the arc, and 81.3 percent (26-of-32) at the free throw line. 
 
Talladega scored 28 points off turnovers, while BPC finished with eight and outscored the Barons in the paint 32-22. The Tornadoes won the battle of the boards 39-29.
 
Hardy was the only Baron to reach double figures with 13 points. Demarcus Johnson, Jr., and Emmanuel Green both tallied seven rebounds to lead the team. 
 
BPC amassed a 33.3 percent (19-of-57) effort from the floor, 25.9 percent (7-of-27) from three and went 54.5 percent (6-of-11) at the line.
 
Talladega College returns to action Saturday in New Orleans against Loyola University. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. at the University Sports Complex.
