Men’s Hoops Falls at Home to Life

TALLADEGA, Ala. – The offense ran out of gas late, which led to a loss for the Talladega College men's basketball team Saturday evening at home to the Life University Running Eagles, 64-58, in Southern States Athletic Conference action. 
 
Talladega (4-6, 0-4) only led twice in the second half, with the first lead coming early at the 19:08 mark with a dunk from Jimmy Beane to put the Tornadoes up 25-24. However, Shomik Shahjahan responded with his only three points of the game with 17:48 to go and gave Life a 27-25 lead.
 
A pair of Beane free throws tied the contest at 27-27, and with a layup by Ethelbert Anum, Dega took a 29-27 lead with 15:58 remaining in the game. Thirty game seconds later, Mohamed Elgohary connected on two free throws to put the Running Eagles up 30-29.
 
Life built as much as a six-point lead after a three-pointer by Elgohary with 8:10 left to go, but Tornadoes stayed in striking distance and battled to tie the game at 47-47 when Jordan Crumbley connected on a short jumper with 5:38 left. Srdjan Popovich hit the three to put the Running Eagles up for good at the 4:36 mark. From there, Life University went up by as much as seven points en route to the 64-58 final. 
 
Dega maintained the lead for most of the first half and built as much a five-point lead after a couple of made free throws from Beane to put the Tornadoes up 19-14 with 4:23 left before halftime. In what became the trend for the game, the Running Eagles answered with a quick 6-1 run to tie the game at 20-20 with 3:01 on the clock. Both teams traded the lead once each before Tylan Green hit a layup with nine seconds left to put Life ahead 24-23 at the half. 
 
Corey Sands led Talladega College in scoring with 17 points along with three rebounds. Beane posted 10 points and six rebounds. Keshawn Pegues and Crumbley matched Beane with six boards each. 
 
The Tornadoes finished 39.2 percent (20-of-51) from the floor, 42.1 percent (8-of-19) beyond the arc, and 52.6 percent (10-of-19) at the free throw line.
 
Elgohary posted a double-double and was the only Running Eagle in double figures with 25 points and 11 rebounds, adding three assists and two blocks. 
 
Life shot 43.5 percent (20-of-46) overall, 29.2 percent (7-of-24) from three, and 65.4 percent (17-of-26) from the line. 
 
Dega has two more games on the road before the holiday break, starting with a trip to Blue Mountain, Mississippi, to face the Blue Mountain Christian University Lady Toppers on Dec. 10 at 7:30 p.m. The trip concludes on Dec. 12 against William Carey University in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, with tip-off scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
