Toppers Pull Away in Win over Dega

BLUE MOUNTAIN, Miss.— It was a back-and-forth affair early, but the Talladega College men's basketball fell behind and never recovered as Blue Mountain Christian University captured a 72-52-win Saturday evening in Southern States Athletic Conference action.

BMC (7-3, 3-2 SSAC) grabbed the first lead of the game that was more than two points at the 17:06 mark when JonDarius Warren connected on a three-pointer to put the Toppers up 7-4. Under two minutes later, Corey Sands hit a three of his own to tie the game at 7-7. Warren put in a layup in transition with 15 minutes to go and sparked a quick 6-0 run for Blue Mountain to go up 13-7 with 13:29 until the half.

The Tornadoes (4-7, 0-5 SSAC) responded with a 10-2 run to tie the game 15-15 after Keshawn Pegues hit a layup with eight minutes until half, and then took the lead at 7:24 off a Jimmy Beane jumper to go up 17-15.

However, a three-pointer from Darien Newchurch with 6:46 to go to put BMC up 18-17 and gave the Toppers a lead the team never surrendered. Blue Mountain closed the half on a 20-0 run to go up 35-17 at the half. BMC maintained a double-digit lead throughout the second half on the way to the 72-52 home victory over Talladega.

BMC did a solid job generating points off Tornado mistakes as the Toppers outscored Dega 31-9 in points off turnovers and 6-2 in fast break points. Talladega held an edge in points in the paint (26-22) and in second-chance points (8-5).

Pegues led the Tornadoes with 16 points and nine rebounds, and Sands contributed 10 points.
The team posted a 34 percent (16-of-47) shooting percentage, which included a 16.7 percent (3-of-18) effort from beyond the arc. Dega shot 73.9 percent (17-of-23) from the free-throw line.

Vatangoe Donzo and Newchurch each scored 13 points to lead BMC, and Warren rounded a trio of double-digit scorers with 11.

The Toppers shot 50 percent (25-of-50) overall, 58.8 percent (10-of-17) from three, and 75 percent (12-of-16) at the free throw line.
