Men’s Hoops Grabs SSAC Win over WCU

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – In a game that looked like it might slip away in the second half, the Talladega College men's basketball team showed some resolve and earned a 58-52 victory over the William Carey University Crusaders Monday night in Southern States Athletic Conference action.

The win for Dega (5-7, 1-5 SSAC) snapped a three-game skid and marked the first SSAC win of the season for the Tornadoes.

Ethelbert Anum hit a layup to put the Tornadoes up 31-22 with 19:06 in the second half. WCU (2-8, 1-5 SSAC) went on a 12-3 capped by a pair of free throws from Arturro Bingham to tie the game at 34-34 with 14 minutes remaining.

Dega and William Carey traded the lead twice each until the 8:58 mark, where Cole Chapman hit a layup to give the Crusaders their largest lead of the night at 40-37. The lead would not last long as two free throws from Javon Tatum and one more from Keshawn Pegues tied the contest 40-40 with 7:46 remaining.

The lead changed three more times between the two teams until Talladega captured the advantage for good after a Tatum jumper at the 2:33 mark to put the Tornadoes up 48-47. Dega built a six-point lead on two occasions, including the final of 58-52.

The incredibly competitive matchup included six total lead changes, all in the second half, and six ties. Both teams scored 18 points in the paint, but Talladega won in second-chance points 16-8. William Carey scored 22 points off turnovers compared to 21 points in the same category for the Tornadoes.

Pegues posted a double-double for Dega with 15 points and 11 rebounds. He added five steals. Tatum scored 13 points and four rebounds, while Corey Sands, who hit most of the game-clinching shots, finished with 11 points.

Talladega shot 39.6 percent (21-of-53) from the floor, 25 percent (6-of-24) from three, and 62.5 percent (10-of-16) at the free throw line.

Four Crusaders scored in double figures, led by 14 points from Kolby Moore. Josiah Moore and Bingham scored 12, while Emile Kazeneza posted 10 points.

WCU posted a 45.2 (19-of-42) shooting percentage, including a 20 percent (4-of-20) effort beyond the arc. The Crusaders posted a solid 83.3 percent (10-of-12) effort at the line.

Dega will have the holiday break to prepare for the SSAC-Sun Challenge hosted by Faulkner University in Montgomery, Alabama. The Tornadoes will battle Warner University on Dec. 29 at 2:15 p.m. The following day the Tornadoes will face Southeastern University at 5:45 p.m.
