WCU Outlasts Dega Women’s Hoops in Defensive Battle

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Talladega College women's basketball team fought hard, but the sturdy defense from the William Carey University Lady Crusaders lifted the team to a 47-38 victory Monday night in Southern States Athletics Conference action.

Neither team gained much separation until the second half. However, in the low-scoring first half Talladega (4-6, 0-5 SSAC) grabbed the advantage after the first quarter when a layup from Brooklyn Talton put the Tornadoes up 10-6 as time expired in the period.

The second quarter saw a reversal of fortune as WCU used a methodical 6-2 run capped by a jumper from Rebekah Engle to tie the game 12-12 at the six-minute mark. Amya Walker connected on a free throw, and Je'Nya Wilder hit a layup to put Dega 15-12 with 2:56 before the half. However, those were the final points of the half for the Tornadoes as a 7-0 run by the Lady Crusaders was capped by a layup by Kyley Seals and William Carey took a 19-15 lead to the half.

William Carey never trailed again after gaining the lead before the start of the third. Talladega did wither the lead down to just one point on several occasions. After WCU built a 24-17 lead with 7:46 left in the quarter, the Tornadoes mounted a 6-0 with a pair of threes by Bryanna Williams to bring the score to 24-23 at the 6:56 mark. After WCU went up by five points once more with 3:39 until the fourth, by the time 1:51 showed on the clock, Amayla Sharif scored a layup and moved the tally to 30-29. Engle hit a jumper to give the Lady Crusaders a 32-29 lead at the end of the period.

The fourth was all WCU as the team built as much as an 11-point lead on the way to protecting home court and securing the 47-38 conference win.

Talton finished with 10 points and eight rebounds, while Wilder also reached 10 points with four rebounds, four assists and two steals for Talladega.

Talladega finished with 28 percent (14-of-50) shooting percentage, including an 18.8 percent (3-of-18) from beyond the arc. The team also went 58.3 percent (7-of-12) from the free-throw line.

Two WCU players scored in double-digits as Engle led all scorers with 22 points alongside seven rebounds. Kolten Blakeney posted 10 points, six rebounds and three assists.

The shooting was only slightly better for the Lady Crusaders as the team finished 39.2 percent (20-of-51) overall, 23.5 percent (4-of-17) from three and 42.9 percent (3-of-7) in free throws.

Talladega is off until Dec. 31, when the Tornadoes will host the University of Tennessee Southern for a New Year's Eve affair at 1 p.m. in the Dr. Hawkins Student Activity Center.
