Women’s Hoops Extends Winning Streak to Three; Completes Sweep of Oakwood

TALLADEGA, Ala. - A quick start for the Talladega College women's basketball team proved crucial as the Tornadoes completed the season sweep of Oakwood College at the Hawkins Student Activity Center.

Talladega (3-0) made 11-of-24 shots in the first quarter including a pair of 3-point shots as the Tornadoes built an early cushion on their way to the 74-63 win over the Ambassadors (0-5).

Amir Brown scored on back-to-back possessions for the Tornadoes midway through the opening quarter - the second coming after she snared an offensive rebound, and Talladega opened an 11-6 lead with 5:01 remaining in the frame. Oakwood battled back to take the lead at 14-13 with an 8-2 spurt, but a jumper from Je'Nya Wilder restored the Talladega lead and the Tornadoes pulled out to a 24-18 lead after 10 minutes of play.

The Tornadoes biggest run of the first half came in the late stages of the second period. With 4:03 to play, Brooklyn Talton cashed in a layup to push the Talladega lead to nine at 34-25, and that ignited an 11-2 run that helped the Tornadoes create a bit of separation and build a 16-point lead at 43-27 with 1:22 left in the quarter. The Ambassadors scored the final four points of the frame, but at intermission, the Tornadoes led 43-31.

Oakwood managed to close the gap in the second half, but the Tornadoes made just enough plays to keep their lead. In the third, Oakwood connected on consecutive 3-pointers in the final minute to close the gap to seven at 56-49, and early in the fourth frame, an 8-0 Oakwood run pulled the Ambassadors within a single point at 58-57 with 6:17 to play.

The game remained close down the stretch, with Talladega hanging on to a two point lead when Brown converted another offensive rebound into an important bucket as it gave Talladega a 67-63 lead with only 1:53 remaining on the clock. That proved to be the final made field goal attempt of the night, and Talladega added six free throws in the final 78 seconds as the Tornadoes closed the game on an 8-0 run to take the 74-63 win.

Amayla Sharif led all Talladega players with 16 points on the night, and Makayla Transou added 15. Brown (12) and Wilder (10) also scored in double figures. Transou and Wilder each reeled in nine boards, while Talton had a game-high 11 rebounds. Wilder also added five assists and two steals.

As a team, Talladega made 28 of 75 (37.3%) shots in the game, though only five of 18 (27.8%) 3-point attempts. At the charity stripe, the Tornadoes were 13-for-20 (65%), and they held a decisive edge on the glass, where they out-rebounded the Ambassadors 54-43.

The Tornadoes will next head west to Dallas, Texas where they will take part in the HBCU Dallas Invitational on November 11-12. On Friday evening, they will open their weekend with a tilt against the Hornets of Harris-Stowe State University (0-2) at 5:30 p.m.
