Tornadoes Split Pair of Games During HBCU Dallas Invitational

DALLAS – The Talladega College women's basketball team played in two games during the HBCU Dallas Invitational hosted by Paul Quinn College and came away with one victory during a trip. The Tornadoes collected a win over the Harris-Stowe University Hornets, 47-44, but fell the following day to Wiley College Lady Wildcats, 74-57.
 
Dega started the road trip with a hard-fought victory over Harris-Stowe, 47-44, Friday night. The teams were nearly even at the half, with the Tornadoes holding a 21-19 edge after 20 minutes of play, but Talladega outscored the Hornets 20-11 in the 3rd quarter to get enough separation.
 
HSU won the 4th, 14-6, but the win went to Dega, 47-44. Talladega College never trailed in the contest.
 
Makayla Transou played nearly the entire game and made the most of it with 15 points, six rebounds and two steals in 39 minutes of action. Monet Brown also scored in double digits with 12 points, while Brooklynn Talton led the boards with 11 rebounds.
 
The defensive battle saw Talladega College shoot 29.8 percent (17-of-57) during the game and 65 percent (13-of-20) in free throw tries. The Tornadoes did not connect on any of their 12 three-point tries.
 
The Hornets went 29.8 percent (17-of-43) from the floor, 20.0 percent (2-of-10) from behind the arc, and 52.6 percent (10-of-19) in free throw tries.
 
Destiney Amaefula led HSU and all scorers with 21 points in the loss. 
 
Dega outscored HSU, 26-20, in the paint but lost the battle on the boards, 40-36, to the Hornets.
 
Saturday's game did not go the way of Talladega, as the Tornadoes lost 74-57 to Wiley College.
 
The Tornadoes came out swinging early and won the opening quarter, 19-17, but from there, the Lady Wildcats separated themselves and outscored Dega, 57-38, the rest of the way to the final buzzer.
 
Je'Nya Wilder posted a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds and added three steals. Amayla Sharif scored 14 points and Transou added 12 points and nine rebounds. 
 
As a team, Talladega went 29.8 percent (17-of-57) from the floor, 24 percent (6-of-24) for three, and 53.4 percent (11-of-21) at the line.
 
Kaitlyn Davis led a trio of double-digit scorers with 18 points, Kayja Jackson had 16 and Alaeh Pressley added 12 points. 
 
Wiley finished 51.9 percent (28-of-54) overall, 31.3 percent (5-of-16) from three, and 53.4 percent (11-of-21) at the line.
 
Talladega College will now prepare for Southern States Athletic Conference action starting with a road game against Faulkner University on Nov. 17. Tip-off in Montgomery, Alabama is set for 5:30 p.m. The Tornadoes follow that game with a noon home matchup with Stillman College on Nov. 19 in the Dr. Hawkins Activity Center.
