Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Talladega Handles BSC for Homecoming Victory, 64-55

TALLADEGA, Ala. – The Talladega College men's basketball team did its part to make the 2022 homecoming festivities memorable as the Tornadoes defeated the Birmingham Southern College Panthers, 64-55 in the Dr. Hawkins Student Activity Center Saturday afternoon.

The Cougars held the edge at halftime with a 26-23 lead before the break, mainly thanks to a 44.4 percent (4-of-9) effort from behind the arc, while the Tornadoes connected on only one of three shots from outside. However, Dega used a 57.9 percent (11-of-19) effort in the paint to keep the matchup close.

Those efforts in the paint helped Talladega explode to a 41-29 edge in the second half as the team shot 60 percent (15-of-25) in the paint but drew several fouls to go 90.9 percent (10-of-11) from the free throw line in the second half on the way to the 64-55 victory.

Keshawn Pegues led the Tornadoes in scoring and on the boards with 14 points and eight rebounds. Ethelbert Anum also finished in double-digits with 10 points along with six rebounds. Corey Sands scored eight points. Javon Tatum kept the offense moving with four assists and added four points, four rebounds and a pair of steals. Jordan Crumbley and Wilfred Campbell also each had four assists.

Talladega finished the game 45.6 percent (26-of-57) from the floor and just 25 percent (2-of-8) from three, but the 83.3 percent second-half effort (10-of-12) from the free throw line proved pivotal to securing the victory.

Kaleb Green and Josh Childers scored 15 and 13 points, repsectively, to lead Birmingham Southern, and Bryson Bishop added 11.

The Panthers went 34.5 percent (19-of-55) from the floor, 24.1 percent (7-of-29) from three, and 62.5 percent (10-of-16) at the free throw line.

While BSC controlled the lead most of the first half, the team never built more than a four-point advantage, with that coming with 16:52 left in the opening half. The lead changed nine times. However, when the last change happened early in the second half with 18:59 on the game clock, the Tornadoes built as much as a 17-point lead with just over four minutes left en route to the victory.

Dega dominated nearly every statistical category, including a 36-20 margin in points in the paint, a 15-4 edge in points off turnovers, and a 22-8 win in points from the bench.

The rebounding edge went in favor of Talladega College, and the team grabbed 22 rebounds (19 defensive) compared to just 14 boards (11 defensive) for BSC.

The Tornadoes will have a week off in preparation for a second matchup against NCAA Division II opponent Morehouse College this season. Tipoff is set for Nov. 12 at 2 p.m. in the Dr. Hawkins Activity Center. Live Video for the contest will be available on talladegatornadoes.com.
