Tornadoes Cap Comeback with Win over Morehouse

TALLADEGA, Ala. – Trailing by 11 at the half, the Talladega College men's basketball team put on their hardhats and outscored the Morehouse College Maroon Tigers, 45-22, in the second half on the way to a 67-55 in the Dr. Hawkins Activity Center Saturday afternoon.

The Tornadoes (3-1) trailed the NCAA Division II opponent 33-22 at the half, powered by some hot shooting from Morehouse as the visitors shot 53.8 percent (7-of-13) from behind the arc and never trailed in the first half.

Dega's comeback in the second half took some time as the game wasn't tied until a free throw from Tre Simmons made the score 43-43 with 9:38 remaining in the game.

However, when Wilfred Campbell hit his three-pointer at the 8:09 mark to give Talladega College its first lead of the game at 46-43, the Tornadoes never looked back as they outscored Morehouse 24-10 on the way to the 67-55 final and a revenge victory.

Keshawn Pegues finished as the high scorer for Dega with a double-double 14 points and 10 rebounds. Ethelbert Anum also posted a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Campbell scored all 12 of his points in the second half in 13 minutes of action during the final frame. The Sophomore connected on seven-of-eight free throws and drained a three-pointer and a jumper to help his cause while adding four boards and a pair of assists.

Talladega College shot 38.6 percent (22-of-57) from the floor, 28.6 percent (4-of-14) from three, and 70.4 percent (19-of-27) from the free throw line.

Billy Thomas was the only Maroon Tiger in double-digits as he came off the bench to score 14 points and snag a pair of rebounds.

Morehouse shot 36.2 percent (17-of-47) during the game, 34.6 percent (9-of-26) from behind the arc, and 75 percent (12-of-16) at the line.

The Tornadoes won nearly every statistical category as they outrebounded Morehouse 43-40, scored more points off turnovers, 29-6, and doubled the visitors on points in the paint with a 26-12 edge in the category.

Morehouse held the largest lead in the contest at 17 points which came with 3:35 left before the half. However, Dega shrank that lead to 11 points before going to the locker room and built a 14-point lead in the second half with 48 seconds left before settling on a 12-point victory margin.

Talladega College will now prepare for Southern States Athletic Conference action starting with a road game against Faulkner University on Nov.17. Tip-off in Montgomery, Alabama is set for 7:30 p.m. The Tornadoes follow that game with a 2 p.m. home matchup with Stillman College in the Dr. Hawkins Activity Center.
