Women’s Basketball Drops SSAC Opener to Mobile

TALLADEGA, Ala. – Talladega College women's basketball fell short in its Southern States Athletic Conference opener Tuesday night, 60-57, against the University of Mobile.
 
Talladega closed the first quarter on an eight-point run to respond to an early 15-5 deficit. It was 15-13 Mobile at the end of the first quarter, but Dega's run was not finished. The Tornadoes scored the first seven points of the second half to lead 20-15. Brooklynn Tate's layup with 7:52 to play in the first half capped a nearly nine-minute, 15-point run. Talladega maintained its lead through the second quarter and led 31-28 at halftime after a Janelle Cook shot protected the advantage. 
 
Dega's lead continued early in the second half, but an Erica Jones layup, Mobile turnover, and Cosette Balmy layup gave Talladega a 38-36 lead with 5:08 to play.
 
Makayla Transou powered a Talladega rally late in the third quarter. Her offensive rebound and layup gave Dega a 41-40 lead, followed by an assist on a Katerina Patkova. She then added a steal and two three-pointers to help Talladega's 50-45 lead with 10 minutes to play. 
 
The home lead remained through the first 3.5 minutes of the fourth quarter until Jones connected on two free throws to tie the game 52-52 and then hit on a three with 3:53 left to give Mobile a lead the Rams never relinquished on the way to the 60-57 victory.
 
Three Tornadoes reached double figures, with Katerina Patkova and Makayla Transou both posting 13 points each, with Amayla Sharif adding 10 points. Brooklynn Tate led on the boards with eight rebounds and added five points. Je'Nya Wilder contributed six rebounds, four steals, three assists and four points. 
 
Talladega finished the game 38.6 percent (22-of-57) from the floor, 37.5 percent (6-of-16) from behind the arc, and 50.0 percent (7-of-14) at the free throw line.
 
Jones led Mobile and all scorers with 20 points and added eight rebounds. Cosette Balmy added 10 points, four steals, four assists and three rebounds. 
 
The Rams finished the game 45.7 percent (21-of-46) on the night, 33.3 percent (5-of-15) from three, and 72.2 percent (13-of-18) in free throws.
 
The Tornadoes (4-2, 1-1 SSAC) are off until Dec. 3, when the team hosts Life University in another SSAC contest. Tip-off is set for noon in the Dr. Hawkins Student Activity Center.
