Tornadoes Fall Short in Battle with Mobile

TALLADEGA, Ala. – A second-half scoring surge for both squads lead to a loss for the Talladega College men's basketball team as the University of Mobile Rams found the edge to win the Southern States Athletic Conference matchup, 72-67, Tuesday night.

The Tornadoes held a 27-26 lead at the half, and a three from Jordan Crumbley to open the second half extended the lead to 30-26.

However, Mobile responded with a quick 8-2 run to grab the lead at 34-32 off a layup from Ezra McKenna at the 18:04 mark. Javon Tatum hit a layup of his own with 15:03 left to go to put Dega up 35-34. Unfortunately, it was the last lead for the home team because once McKenna added another layup at 14:33 to put the Rams up 36-35, Mobile never relinquished the advantage again.

While scoring picked up significantly, the Rams outscored Talladega 36-32 the rest of the game, which included building a nine-point lead with 35 seconds left on a three-pointer from PJ King on the way to the 72-67 final score.

The nine-point lead eclipsed the eight-point lead Mobile built in the first half after McKenna tipped in a miss to put his squad up 19-11 with 6:34 until halftime. Dega responded with a 16-7 run to close the half capped by a free throw from Jimmy Beane to give the home team the 27-26 halftime advantage.

Four Tornadoes finished in double figures, led by Tatum's 15 points. He added five rebounds, three assists and three steals. Corey Sands posted 14 points, Beane had 11 and Crumbley scored 10 points. Keshawn Pegues led on the boards with nine rebounds.

Talladega College shot 42.3 percent (22-of-52) from the floor, 55.6 percent (10-of-18) from three, and 76.5 percent (13-of-17) at the line.

The Rams also had four players score in double-digits, led by 17 points and nine rebounds from McKenna. Pooh Frazier scored 15 points, while King and Trent Moye scored 14 points each.

The Tornadoes (4-5, 0-3 SSAC) are off until Dec. 3, when the team hosts Life University in another SSAC contest. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. in the Dr. Hawkins Student Activity Center.
