Four Tornadoes Reach Double Figures in Win over Wiley

CEDAR PARK, Texas – A strong offensive effort, led by four Talladega College men's basketball players with double-digit points, propelled the Tornadoes to a dominant second half en route to a 71-52 victory over Wiley College Wildcats Thursday evening in the AAUL HBCU Basketball Invitational at the HEB Center.

Tied 33-33 after a half of competition, Dega's offense came out firing led behind 15-second-half points from Javon Tatum and Keshawn Pegues scoring 14 points in the final 20 minutes.

Pegues finished with 19 points, 10 rebounds and four assists while Tatum added six assists, four steals and three rebounds to his 15-point effort. Tre Simmons and Corey Sands both scored 11 points each with Sands scoring all his points as a reserve.

While the first half contained 10 total lead changes, once Talladega gained the lead on a three-pointer from Tatum at the 18:10 mark the team never looked back on the way to the 19-point victory.

The Tornadoes finished the game 44.4 percent (24-of-54) in all shots, 47.4 percent (9-of-19) from three, and 70 percent (14-of-20) in free throws. Dega outscored the Wildcats in points off turnovers, 14-6 while both teams scored 22 points in the paint each.

Wiley College edged Talladega on the boards, 28-20, and saw more production from the bench, 31-16, in favor of the Wildcat reserves. Wiley also posted a slight 13-11 advantage in second chance points.

Maurice Harvey led a trio of Wildcats in double-digits as he finished with 19 points. David Williams posted 12 points and eight rebounds while Shamir Mosley added 10 points.

Wiley shot 40.4 percent (19-of-47) from the floor, 26.3 percent (5-of-19) behind the arc, and 90 percent (9-of-10) from the line.

Talladega (4-4) is now set to host a pair of Southern States Athletic Conference contests next week. Up first is a Nov. 29 matchup against the University of Mobile set for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off in the Dr. Hawkins Student Activities Center. Then on Dec. 3, the Tornadoes face Life University in SSAC action. Tip for that game is scheduled for 2 p.m.
