Tornadoes Handle PSC in Straight Sets

TALLADEGA, Ala. – In a contest that was tightly contested throughout, the Talladega College volleyball team defeated the Philander Smith College Lady Panthers in straight sets Tuesday night in the Dr. Billy C. Hawkins Student Activity Center.

The non-conference contest moved the Tornadoes' record to 11-14 on the season and ends a two-game slide. 

Talladega (25-20, 25-22, 28-26) only trailed by as much as four points twice with both instances coming in the thrilling final game where PSC held a, 13-9, and a, 15-11, lead on separate occasions before the Tornadoes came roaring back to secure the 28-26 win the set and the match sweep.

Zyaire-Prettie Garrit (SR/Long Beach, CA) led Dega with 12 kills on a .276 attack percentage while Nedu Evans (SR/Cartersville, GA) finished just behind with eight kills. Raven Clater (SR/Ft. Worth, TX) posted 14 assists while Maloree Calzadillas (JR/Benton City, WA) passed 13 assists.

Dominique Madarang (SR/Riverside, CA) led the back row with 10 digs while Kenya Glenn (SO/Waipahu, HI) had eight digs. Clater and Calzadillas both added seven digs each. 

Jordan Johnson and Taniya Cavett both posted six kills to pace the Lady Panthers. Essence Wren passed a match-leading 24 assists and led the Philander Smith back row with 11 digs. 

The Tornadoes will now focus on the final four Southern States Athletic Conference matches of the regular season starting with two on the road. Next up for the squad is a matchup against Stillman College set for a 6 p.m. start on Oct. 28 in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Talladega College will wrap up the road trip against Blue Mountain (Miss.) College on Oct. 29 at 1 p.m.
