Entering her second season with Talladega College, Lashaunda Spurgeon, a native of Albertville, Alabama excelled in volleyball, basketball, and track & field at Albertville High School. Spurgeon went on to pursue a bachelor of science in Health and Physical Education as a standout student-athlete in volleyball and track and field at Stillman College. She’s earned numerous accolades, including top rankings in service aces, kills, and blocks in volleyball, and SIAC women's javelin champion titles in 2011 and 2012. Not only that, Spurgeon was inducted into the Stillman College Athletics Hall of Fame in 2024.
She began her coaching career at Hillcrest High School and Club Crimson Volleyball in Tuscaloosa, Alabama after graduating from Stillman College. Later she was promoted to head coach at Vernon College in 2017, achieving a 31-32 record over two seasons and an overall 107-72 record during her five years there. In 2019, she served as an assistant coach at Fayetteville State University, where the team went 19-7, winning the Southern Division and the CIAA Tournament, earning a spot in the Division II NCAA Tournament.
Spurgeon has nine impactful years of coaching and recruiting experience at the NCAA Division II, NAIA, and NJCAA levels. She was named Gulf Coast Athletic Conference (GCAC) Coach of the Year in Spring 2021 including an impressive 59-20 during her time at Dillard University. Under her leadership, the team earned numerous accolades, such as 2021 GCAC Regular Season Champions (8-0), 2022 GCAC Regular Season Champions (12-0), and 2022 GCAC Tournament Runner-up. Her players received multiple honors, including seven All-GCAC first team selections, five second team selections, and various individual awards.
Spurgeon was appointed the men’s and women's head volleyball coach at Talladega College in February 2023. During her first season with the Tornadoes, Spurgeon picked up GCAC Coach of the Year honors in the 2023 season and was also named the AVCA Southeast Region Coach of the Year. She led the Lady Tornadoes to a 31-9 overall record, including a 15-1 ledger in league play. Under her guidance, Spurgeon's team won the GCAC regular-season championship and tournament. She helped the squad win the last 10 regular-season matches to claim the title. During the 10-match winning streak, the team swept nine contests and lost just one set. For the season, the Lady Tornadoes went 11-1 at home. Additionally, TC achieved its first championship in volleyball and set the record for most wins in school history. In 2023, Spurgeon also reached 100 career wins, bringing her overall win-loss record to 112-64.
She holds a Master of Science in Sports Administration with a concentration in Educational Leadership from Southeastern Oklahoma State University.
