Softball Wraps Regular Season with Sweep over Oakwood

OXFORD, Ala. – The Talladega College put a bow on the end of the regular season with a doubleheader sweep over the Oakwood University Ambassadors Monday afternoon at Choccolocco Park. The Tornadoes won the first game 2-0 and the second matchup 11-3.
 
GAME 1 – Talladega 2, Oakwood 0
 
Scoring only occurred at the bottom of the fourth in the first contest, which started with a K'yanna Wimbish RBI single to center field. Marianna Perez scored on the hit by Wimbish. Ashli-Nicole Gutierrez followed with a single to left field to plate Gabriele Garcia and reached the 2-0 final score.
 
Wimbish finished as the batting leader with a 2-for-3 effort with an RBI. Perez and Garcia both collected stolen bases.
 
Gutierrez pitched a complete game with two strikeouts, allowing two walks and four hits.
 
GAME 2 – Talladega 11, Oakwood 3
 
The Ambassadors struck first in the top of the second when Ashlyn Hallman laid down a bunt, which forced an error to allow her and Sydney Arnett to come around and score for an early 2-0 lead.
 
Rayna Davis responded in the third with a two-run homer to right-center as Monet Brown scored on the play to tie the game at 2-2.
 
In the fourth, Talladega posted five runs, starting with an RBI single from Hayley Clausell to bring in Gutierrez. Brown followed with an RBI single before Garcia blasted a three-run home run to center for Perez and Brown to also score and move the tally to 7-2.
 
Oakwood posted one more run on a sacrifice fly from Jana Morrow in the fifth.
 
The Tornadoes added four runs in the sixth with a two-RBI single from Elisa Clay to score Garcia and Brown. Gutierrez followed with two more RBIs with a double to left field as Clay and Davis scored to reach the 11-3 final margin and secure the doubleheader sweep.
 
Davis finished the second game 2-for-2 with two RBIs, two runs, two walks, a home run, and a double. Garcia posted a 2-for-3 effort with three RBIs, two runs, and a homer.
 
Gutierrez threw four innings to earn the win in the circle with strikeouts. She allowed six hits, two earned runs, and a walk. Miranda Butler pitched two innings and only surrendered a hit and a walk.
After finishing the regular season 3-1 against Continental Athletic Conference teams, Talladega College waits for CAC Tournament selections to be announced later this week.
