Men's Basketball Picks Up 20th Win of the Season


TALLADEGA, Ala. – Three players tallied double-digits in scoring to guide the Talladega College men's basketball team to its 20th win of the season with an 82-59 win over conference foe Oakwood University tonight. The Tornadoes are now 20-6 and 19-4 in GCAC action while the Ambassadors fall to 1-24 and 1-15 in the conference.

Oakwood took an early 6-2 lead to open the game but Talladega used a 6-2 run that started when Tre Simmons hit a three at 16:43 to tie things at eight. Wilfred Campbell drained at three at 13:50 to give Talladega a 13-11 lead.  From that moment, Talladega used a 26-14 run to push its lead to 39-25 going into halftime.

With the momentum on Talladega's side coming out of halftime. Oakwood looked to change things and it looked to go that way when it scored the first five points of the second half to make it, 39-30.  But the Tornadoes put together a 15-4 run to push its lead to 54-34 with 13:12 left in the game. The Talladega offense and defense were clicking for the rest of the game, which allowed the Tornadoes to cruise to an 82-59 win.

Talladega scored 56 of its 82 points in the paint while only giving up 20 points in the paint. The Tornadoes posted 16 second chance points to the Ambassadors eight.

The Tornadoes won the battle on the glass grabbing 46 rebounds to Oakwood's 24 boards.

Talladega shot 59.3 percent (35-of-59) from the floor and 50 percent (6-of-12) from the line.

Cartell Thompson led Talladega with 15 points while going 7-of-8 from the field. He grabbed four rebounds in the process.

Shaun Walker and Ethelbert Anum each tallied 12 points apiece. Teammate Lamont Sams led the team in rebounds with six while adding nine points of his own.

Talladega will look to close out the season at home on Saturday at 3 p.m. against GCAC foe Philander Smith University.
