Men's Basketball Wins at Fisk

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Talladega College men's basketball team earned a 61-55 GCAC win over Fisk University tonight on the road to even the season series at 1-1.  The Tornadoes are now 19-4 and 8-2 in the conference while the Bulldogs are 11-12 and 8-6 in GCAC action.

Fisk took an early 12-7 lead to open the contest, but the Tornadoes used a 12-2 run to take a 19-14 lead with 8:22 left. Talladega was able to hold on to the lead as it built a 10-point at 32-22, but Fisk was able to score the next eight straight points to trail 32-30 at halftime.

Coming out of halftime, the Bulldogs hit a three just 27 seconds into the second half to go back in front, 33-32. The Tornadoes went back and forth with Fisk to where each team ended up knotted at 36 with just over 15 and a half left in the game. Both teams continued to trade baskets with the other being in front or being tied. With 3:04 left, Talladega trailed 53-52 until Shaun Walker and Lamont Sams scored the next nine points to give the Tornadoes a 61-55 lead. The Talladega defense did the rest as it allowed just one shot to get off with 12 seconds left in the game to secure the win.

The Talladega bench was the difference tonight as it outscored Fisk's bench 30 to eight.

Walker led the Talladega in scoring with 16 points off the bench while going 6-of-11 from the field with nine boards. He also grabbed a team-leading nine rebounds and went 4-of-6 from the line.

Sams also tallied double-digits in points with 13 and teammate D'Andre Boyd finished with 10. Both players each finished with five field goals made.

Wilfred Campbell finished with a game-high three steals while adding five points of his own.

Talladega is back home on Tuesday, Feb 13 when it hosts GCAC rival Tougaloo College at 7 p.m.
