NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Talladega College men's basketball team dropped its second game in a row and second in conference action as it fell 87-77 in overtime to Southern University at New Orleans (SUNO) this afternoon on the road. Talladega finished with four players in double figures in points for the contest. The Tornadoes fall to 8-4 and 2-2 in the conference while SUNO is now 3-8 and 2-1.
SUNO took a commanding 18-8 lead to start the first half, but Talladega tied the game at 26 after using an 18-8 run with just under seven and a half left on the clock. SUNO retook the lead after making a jumper to go up 28-26, but
Arthur Williams matched SUNO's jumper with one of his own to tie things back up in a difference of nine seconds. The lead did not last long as SUNO drained another jumper, but
Corey Sands drained a three to put Talladega in front for the first time at, 31-30. SUNO strung together a 6-3 run to go back in front 36-33 with 3:09 remaining in the half. With less than two and a half minutes to go, Talladega used a 7-2 run to take a 40-38 lead into the locker room.
The Tornadoes found themselves tied at forty just 46 seconds into the start of the second half, but
Lamont Sams' jumper started an 8-2 Talladega run to make it a 48-42 game. SUNO was able to tie the contest at 48 and then again at 52 before taking a 56-52 lead with just under 10 minutes to go. The Tornadoes tallied the next six points to knot things at 58 before SUNO retook the lead, 60-58. Both teams traded points to only end up tied at 71 at the end of regulation.
SUNO started overtime by hitting three straight foul shots and a jumper to go up 76-71 with 4:11 left in OT. Talladega attempted to chip away at the lead but it was not enough as SUNO kept the Tornadoes at arm's reach to go on to win, 87-77.
The Tornadoes as a team shot 50.9 percent from the floor while shooting just under 42 percent from three-point range and 82.4 percent from the line.
Sands paced all Tornadoes with 17 points while grabbing five boards in the process. He was 5 of 8 from the floor, 3 of 6 from beyond the arc, and 4 of 5 from the charity strip. Fellow teammate Williams tallied 15 points while going 7 of 12 from the field.
Sams who played the third most minutes, registered 12 points while going a perfect 4 of 4 from the line. He grabbed four rebounds and finished tied for the team-high in blocks with two.
Shaun Walker was the fourth Tornado to have double-digits in scoring with 10 points and finished with two blocks. He shot 5 of 7 from the field.
Jordan Brewer led the squad in rebounds with seven while adding seven points of his own and
Derek Burditt finished with a team-high six steals while tallying six points.
Talladega is back in action tomorrow when it faces conference rival Tougaloo College at 3 p.m. at Dillard University.
