Women’s Hoops Falters in Home Opener to WCU

TALLADEGA, Ala. – After a pair of exhibition contests, the Talladega College women's basketball team has opened the 2024-25 season in the Dr. Billy C. Hawkins Activity Season. However, the Tornadoes dropped the game 68-49 to the William Carey University Crusaders Wednesday night.
 
Kameron Jones led Dega in the low-scoring affair with eight points, three assists and a steal. DeJaria Lewis posted six points, five rebounds and five steals. Beautiful Curry led on the boards with six rebounds and added six points.
 
William Carey (3-0) raced to an 8-0 lead before Jones buried a jumper at the 6:48 mark to cut the lead to 8-2. WCU outscored the Tornadoes (0-1) 20-8 in the quarter for a lead at the break.
 
WCU's defense continued to hold strong in the second as the team pushed to a 19-point, 37-18 halftime advantage.
 
The third quarter nearly mirrored the first as the Crusaders outpaced the Tornadoes 19-8 in the period to take a 56-26 lead to the fourth.
 
Dega outscored the visitors in the final period, 14-12, with Stephanie Hubbard pouring in a team-high five points in the stanza to reach the 68-40 ending tally.
 
As a unit, Talladega shot 26.2 percent (17-of-65) from the floor, 4.2 percent (1-of-24) from beyond the arc, and 38.5 percent (5-of-13) at the charity stripe.
 
WCU posted a 52 percent (26-of-50) effort shooting, 47.4 percent (9-of-19) from three, and 58.3 percent (7-of-12) from the free throw line.
 
Kolten Blakeney led the Crusaders and all scorers with 15 points. Both Jenna Garriga and Shaneal Corpuz added 10 points to round a trio of double-digit scorers.
 
Next up for Talladega College is a trip to Memphis, Tennessee, to face NCAA Division II opponent, LeMoyne-Owen College. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
