Men's Basketball Opens Conference Play with Win

TALLADEGA, Ala. – The Talladega College men's basketball team started the home season with a 76-55 win over Southern University at New Orleans (SUNO) this afternoon at home. The Tornadoes are a perfect 9-0 at home against SUNO now. Talladega moved to 2-0 on the season while SUNO fell to 1-3.

Both teams were tied at four less than four minutes into the first half, but a three from Wilfred Campbell put Talladega in front, 7-5.  Campbell's three sparked an 11-0 run to put the Tornadoes up 15-5 with 13:30 remaining.  Talladega didn't ease off the pedal as it put together a 9-1 run to go up 23-8 after SUNO hit a layup to end the 11-0 earlier. The Tornadoes' defense held SUNO to just 18 points for the first half and the offense pushed its lead to 38-18 going into the locker room at the half.

Talladega's Jordan Brewer got the scoring started in the second half as he hit the backend of a pair of free throws to make it 39-18 fifty seconds in. For a little over two minutes, neither team was able to score, but that all ended when Lamont Sames laid one in to make it 41-18 with 17:30 left in the contest. SUNO attempted to chip away at the lead, but it was not enough as the Tornadoes held a 20-plus point lead for the rest of the game.  The Talladega defense allowed just two three-pointers and less than 15 field goals for the whole second half to secure the win.

The Tornadoes shot 46.2% from the floor and just under 35% from three-point range.

Shaun Walker paced all Talladega players with 14 points and seven boards. He was 7-of-11 from the field. Fellow teammate Corey Sands tallied 12 points in 26 minutes of action. Sands and Campbell each finished with two three-pointers to led the team.

Sams added seven points of his own while cleaning up on the board with six rebounds all on the defensive side.

Talladega is back in action on Wednesday, Nov. 6 when it hosts William Carey University at 7 p.m.
