Women’s Basketball Opens HBCUAC Play with Win over Wilberforce

TALLADEGA, Ala. – The Talladega College women's basketball team started competition in the Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference in grand fashion with a 63-47 victory over the Wilberforce University Lady Bulldogs Saturday afternoon in the Dr. Billy C. Hawkins Activity Center.
 
DeJaria Lewis ignited for 18 points on 9-of-11 shooting, nine rebounds, a pair of steals and a block. Beautiful Curry topped double figures with 13 points alongside eight rebounds and three assists.
 
Wilberforce scored first on a layup from Constance Chaplin at the 9:37 mark. Curry matched the bucket with 6:31 left in the opening quarter and Kameron Jones nailed a layup to push Dega ahead 4-2.
 
Carlisha Enge later capped the low scoring quarter with a layup to give the Tornadoes a 10-6 advantage.
 
The Lady Bulldogs opened the second quarter with an 8-0 run to take a 14-10 lead with 7:37 on the clock. However, Kendallyn McCoy splashed a three-pointer to stop the run, and Curry added a layup to put Talladega ahead 15-14 for the final lead change of the game with 6:10 left before halftime.
 
The Tornadoes outscored Wilberforce 14-4 the rest of the quarter to take a 29-18 lead to the half.
 
Talladega pushed the lead to as much 19 points in the third when Courtney Lowe connected on a three to move the score to 43-24 with 4:03 remaining in the quarter. Curry used a pair of free throws to match the large 19-point lead to move the score to 47-28 with 1:37 in the period.
 
Makyla Tucker hit a three for WU 36 seconds before the end of the quarter to move the score to 47-33 after three quarters. However, Talladega went on to outscore the visitors 16-14 in the final quarter on the way to a 63-37 victory, the first of the season.
 
The Tornadoes shot 41.8 percent (28-of-67) from the floor, 25 percent (4-of-16) at the arc, and 60 percent (3-of-5) at the free throw line.
 
Chaplin led Wilberforce with 21 points and seven rebounds, while Daijah Anderson posted 10 points.
 
The Lady Bulldogs finished 30.6 percent (19-of-62) overall, 11.1 percent (2-of-18) from three, and 58.3 percent (7-of-12) from the line.
 
Talladega College (1-1, 0-1 HBCUAC) returns to action Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. against Miles College in Fairfield, Alabama.
