Men's Basketball Wins OT Thriller to Open Season

WEST POINT, Ga. – The Talladega College men's basketball team started the season on the road with a thrilling 77-72 overtime win against Point University tonight while four players tallied double-digits in points. The Tornadoes are 1-0 while the Skyhawks are 0-1 on the season.

Talladega wasted no time when it leaped out to a 7-0 lead in the first half before the Skyhawks were able to get on the board.  Point was able to drain a three to get on the board and it was able to claw its way back to tie things at 11. The Skyhawks grabbed their first lead of the game off a three with 12:23 left to go up 14-13, but Talladega scored the next four points in a row to reclaim the lead and go up 17-14 with just over 11 and a half minutes left. Point made it a one-point game off a layup at 11:31, but both teams after that went scoreless for almost two minutes before the Skyhawks took the lead again off another three to make it 19-17 and then hit another three with 9:07 to go up, 22-17. Talladega put together a 6-2 run to trail 24-23 with eight minutes to go, but both teams after that traded baskets with the Skyhawks holding a slim 33-32 lead with 1:35 left. A Corey Sands foul shot tied the game at 33 and with 23 seconds left Wilfred Campbell drained a three to put the Tornadoes in front 35-33 going into halftime.

Coming out of the break, the Tornadoes were able to build off its lead but Point kept things close to trail, 39-38. For almost two minutes straight neither team was able to find the bottom of the basket until Campbell laid one in to make it 41-38 with 16:23 left to go. Point once again used the three-ball to tie things up and then hit a pair of foul shots to go in front 43-41 with 13:20 to go. For most of the second half, both teams went back and forth in scoring only to end up tied at 52.  The Skyhawks took a 57-56 lead but a layup by Talladega's Shaun Walker put the Tornadoes in front 58-57 with 3:45 left. With 1:04 left in the game, Talladega to a 64-61 lead off of Jordan Brewer's foul shot but three straight foul shots by the Skyhawks tied the game at 64 with 36 seconds left. Each team was able to get a shot off before time expired as both teams headed into overtime.

Brewer started the scoring for Talladega in overtime when he laid one in to go up, 66-64. His layup sparked a run a 9-5 run to put the Tornadoes in front 73-69 with 38 seconds left.  Talladega held off a late Point rally to win 77-72.

Campbell paced all Talladega players with 26 points while going a perfect 5 of -5 from the line. He also led the team with three 3-pointers made. Campbell was 9 of 13 from the floor in the process.

Walker and Brewer were each 5 of 7 from the floor. Brewer finished with 13 points while Walker tallied 12 of his own. Walker also grabbed seven boards in the process.

Teammate Sands registered 11 points while going 3 of 5 from the line.

Tre Simmons led the Tornadoes on the glass as he grabbed 11 boards while adding six points of his own.

Talladega travels to Mississippi on Wednesday, Oct. 30 to face Alcorn State University at 6 p.m. in an exhibition.
