Men's Basketball Extends Winning Streak to Eleven

TALLADEGA, Ala. – The Talladega College men's basketball team extended its winning streak to 11 games following a 55-53 win over visiting Miles College tonight. With the win, the Tornadoes move to 13-1 while the Bears fall to 9-4 on the year.

Trailing 8-2 in the opening half, Talladega used a pair of free throws from Corey Sands and a layup by Shaun Walker to make it a two-point game with 13:36 left.  The Bears were able to gain some distance as it pushed the lead to 11-6 but the Tornadoes tied things up. Both teams found them tied one more time before Talladega used a 17-3 run to break the game open and take a 30-16 lead with 1:30 remaining in the half.  Miles was held to a field goal and a pair of foul shots before the half ended with the Tornadoes in front, 33-21.

Miles used a 7-0 run to open the second half and cut the lead to five while holding the Tornadoes to just three shot attempts during that span. Both teams went back and forth for most of the half with Talladega holding the edge, but the Bears were able to cut the lead to 47-44 with just under four and a half minutes left. Following a missed Bears' layup at 3:55, Javonni Bickham grabbed the rebound and moved the ball downcourt to D'Andre Boyd who missed his layup but was able to tip it in to give Talladega a cushion. Boyd went on to score the next two points off a pair of free throws to make it a six-point game. Sands added to the lead when he hit a clutch jumper for Talladega to make it 53-47 but the Bears drained a three to make it 53-50 with 1:22 remaining.  Boyd's layup pushed the lead to 55-50 just in time because the Bears hit a three with 43 seconds left to make it a two-point game. A pair of missed foul shots by Talladega allowed Miles to grab the rebound but were unable to get a shot off as time expired to give the Tornadoes the 55-53 victory.

Talladega edged the Bears out on the boards 38 to 30, but the difference maker for the Tornadoes was points in the paint. Talladega tallied 28 points in the paint to Miles' 14.

Boyd finished with 17 points to pace both teams while shooting 6-of-10 from the field for Talladega. He grabbed a team-high eight rebounds while going 5-of-11 from the line in the process.

Both Wilfred Campbell and Ethelbert Anum each registered eight points. Teammate Jevon Tatum hit the team's only three of the game.

Talladega is back in action on Friday, Jan 12 when it travels to Holly Springs, Miss to face GCAC foe Rust College at 7 p.m.
