Men's Basketball Back in the Win Column

NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Talladega College men's basketball team got back on track and snapped its two-game skid with a 71-61 conference road victory over Dillard University tonight.  Talladega moves to 17-3 and 7-1 in the GCAC while the Wildcats fall to 9-11 and 5-8.

Talladega came out of the gates to an early 6-2 lead in the first half, but the Wildcats were able to close the gap to two (8-6) in less than a minute.  The Tornadoes used a 12-6 run to push the lead to 20-11 with just over eight minutes left in the half.  Dillard used an 8-0 run to make it a one-point game, but Talladega closed out the half on a 10-0 run to take a 30-19 lead into halftime.

Coming out of halftime, Talladega kept the run going as it added another 13 points to it while only allowing seven points to push the lead to, 43-23. Dillard tried to cut the lead down but was unable to get it to single digits. The Tornadoes at one point had a 17-point lead with eight and a half minutes left in the contest. The Talladega defense forced multiple missed Wildcat shots late in the half as the Tornadoes went on for a 71-61 win.

Talladega forced 16 turnovers with 10 of them being stolen.  Those 16 turnovers were transitioned into 29 points for the Tornadoes.

The Tornado bench was a force tonight as they outscored the Wildcats 29 to 12.

Wilfred Campbell had a night as he tallied a team-high 19 points while shooting 60 percent (6-of-10) from the field, 4-of-5 from the line, and a team-high three 3-pointers made (3-of-5).

Campbell wasn't the only player to hit double figures in scoring. Issad Solano finished with 14 points and grabbed five boards in the process. Teammate Sam Lamont also finished with five rebounds while adding seven points.

Both Corey Sands and D'Andre Boyd led the team in steals with three. Sands added seven points of his own while Boyd added six.

Talladega is back home on Thursday, Feb 1 when it hosts GCAC foe Fisk University at 7 p.m.
