ATLANTA, Ga. – The Talladega College women's volleyball team bounced back in its second game of the day with a 3-1 (25-14, 20-25, 25-20, 25-17) over Georgia College & State University last night. With the win, the Tornadoes moved to 16-7 on the year while the Bobcats all to 10-4.
Tied at four apiece in the opening set, Talladega used a 6-1 run to break things open and take a 10-4 lead. The Bobcats attempted to chip away at the lead but only cut the difference to four twice in the set. Leading 15-11 the Tornadoes put together their largest run of the game as they used a 10-4 run to take the set, 25-14.
Both teams in set two saw most of the same with either team being tied or ahead by a point or two until the Bobcats scored four straight points to take a 18-16 lead. Talladega was able to cut the lead to one but it wouldn't be enough as the Bobcats closed out the set on a 7-3 run to even the match at one.
Talladega opened up a 6-4 lead in set three looking to retake the match, but the Bobcats used a 6-1 run to go in front, 10-7. Talladega was able to tie it at 10 from back-to-back kills from
Kortni Johnson and an ace from
Zyaire Prettie Garrit. GCSU answered back with three straight points to go back in front 13-10, both teams after that traded points until the set was knotted at 16 each. The Tornadoes then closed things out on a 9-4 run to take the set 25-20 and take a 2-1 lead in the match.
Both teams again went back and forth to open set four and see themselves tied at seven. The Bobcats took a 9-7 lead but it didn't last as Talladega scored three points in a row to go up, 10-9. The Tornadoes' lead didn't hold very long as GCSU answered back with three points of its own to go up 12-10, both teams continued to trade points until they were tied at 16. Talladega put things to rest as it used a 9-1 run to close out the set 25-17 and win the match.
Prettie Garrit paced Talladega in kills with 22 while hitting .400 for the match. Teammate
Dominique Madarang finished with a double-double in assists with 22 and digs with 12.
The Tornado Briyith Echeverii finished with a team-high 22 digs and aces with two while
Giovana Costarelli tallied 19 assists in the process.
Talladega is back in action this Saturday when it travels to New Orleans to face conference foe Dillard University at 6 p.m.
