LEBANON, Tenn. – The Talladega College softball team started the season on the road. On Monday, the Tornadoes fell in a mid-week doubleheader to the Cumberland University Phoenix at Billy Dee Ross Stadium.

GAME 1 – Cumberland 9, Talladega 1 (5 innings)

Gabriela Garcia registered the first RBI of the 2023 campaign for Dega (0-2) with a double to left-center to drive in Rayna Davis.

The Phoenix (6-5) responded with two runs in the bottom of the first, later exploded for seven runs in the fourth to go up 9-1 and win the first game in five innings.

Davis finished the first contest 3-for-3 with the run scored, while Kennedy Freeman walked twice.

Michaela Evans (0-1) struck out two batters and allowed six hits with four earned runs during 4.0 innings of work against Cumberland.

GAME 2 – Cumberland 24, Talladega 3 (5 innings)

The Phoenix used aggressive bats early to take control and scored nine runs in the bottom of the first, eight runs in the second and added one more in the third to take an 18-0 lead before the Tornadoes could respond.

In the top of the fourth, Davis singled to center field, which allowed Freeman to score and get Dega on the board at 18-1. However, Cumberland crossed home six times in the bottom of the fourth to push the commanding lead to 24-1.

Talladega did not go quietly in the fifth as Freeman singled through the left side as Evans scored, and Garcia followed with a second RBI double of the day to left-center as K'yanna Wimbish touched home to move the tally to the 24-3 final margin.

Freeman finished 1-for-1 with an RBI, a run scored, and a walk drawn.
