Upset Bid Falls Short for Dega against BMC

MONTGOMERY, Ala. –  The Talladega College women's basketball team battled hard but fell in the opening round of the Southern States Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Tournament Tuesday afternoon at the Multiplex at Crampton Bowl. The Tornadoes lost 55-53 to the Blue Moutain Christian University Lady Toppers.
 
Carmen Taylor scored first for Blue Mountain (16-12) with a layup on the Lady Toppers' first possession. Makayla Transou responded with a jumper in the paint to get Talladega (5-21) on the board with 8:46 left in the opening period. BMC scored four straight points before Transou scored once more just over a minute later to make the score 6-4. The Lady Toppers ended the low-scoring quarter with a 15-10 edge.
 
Dega turned up the pressure in the second quarter and posted a 7-0 run to start the frame and take a 17-15 lead. Amayla Sharif kicked off the rally with a layup which Katerina Patkova followed with a jumper to cut the deficit to a point. Je'Nya Wilder hit two free throws, and Shamya Loman hit a shot from the line to cap the rally.
 
The Tornadoes enjoyed the lead for about two minutes of game time until Charmen Taylor hit a pair of free throws to tie the game and later hit a three with 5:11 until halftime to give BMC a 20-17 advantage. Loman cut the lead down to one on the next possession with a jumper, but Crystin Guy hit a shot in transition to push the lead to 22-19 for the Lady Toppers, and the team went to the half up 31-27.
 
In the third quarter, the Lady Toppers maintained a steady advantage and looked to be in firm control in the second half after outscoring the Tornadoes 14-10 in the period to take a 45-37 lead to the fourth.
 
Dega did not go quietly in the final quarter and dominated the period on a 13-4 scoring run to take a 50-49 lead with 2:26 remaining in the game, capped by a fast-break layup by Transou. Carmen Taylor hit a jumper, and Chartina Brooks hit a layup to regain the lead for BMC and extend it to 53-50. The Tornadoes responded with a free throw by Wilder and a layup by Transou with 22 seconds left to tie the game once more at 53-53. The Lady Toppers clinched the victory with seven seconds left after Guy hit a layup to put Blue Mountain up 55-53 and secure a trip to the quarterfinals.
 
Transou tied for the game lead in scoring with 17 points and four assists, while Loman posted a double-double thanks to 11 points and 14 rebounds. Sharif scored four of her nine points in the fourth quarter and added eight rebounds and three steals.
 
Charmen Taylor posted a double-double for BMC with 17 points and 13 rebounds, and Carmen Taylor reached double figures with 12 points and two steals.
 
The Lady Toppers advance to face Faulkner University tomorrow at 4:30 p.m. at the Multiplex at Crampton Bowl.
