MARSHALL, Texas –
JaVonni Bickham's double-double propels Talladega College men's basketball to a ninth straight win with a 70-63 victory on the road over GCAC foe Wiley College this afternoon. The Tornadoes improved to 11-1 overall and 3-0 in the conference while the Wildcats fell to 6-7 and 2-3 in the GCAC.
Both teams found themselves tied three times in the early opening of the first half before Wiley used a 4-0 run to take a 10-6 lead with 15:08 left. Bickham pulled Talladega within two as he hit a pair of free throws before
Lamont Sams drained a jumper to tie things at 10. Both teams went back and forth for most of the half with the Wildcats taking a 34-33 lead off a foul shot heading into halftime.
Coming out of halftime,
Corey Sands hit a three in the first 21 seconds of the half to put Talladega up 36-34 but back-to-back jumpers by Wiley put them back in front. The Tornadoes tied the game at 38, but Wiley used a 7-2 run to take a 45-40 lead with 16:03 left. Wiley was able to hold a single-digit lead for most of the half until Talladega used an 8-1 run to tie things up at 57. Following that run the Tornadoes were able to put its biggest run of the contest together as they closed things out on a 13-6 run to pick up its 11
th win of the year.
Talladega registered 11 second-chance points while making sure the Wildcats were unable to convert any second-chance points for the game. The Tornadoes' bench was able to record 17 points to Wiley's 10 for the game.
Talladega owned the glass as it registered 31 boards to Wiley's 19.
Bickham finished with 16 points and 13 boards for Talladega while going 12-of-14 from the foul line. Teammate
D'Andre Boyd finished with a team-high 18 points and field goals made with seven.
Wilfred Campbell finished with five assists to go along with his six points and three steals.
Talladega is back in action after the holiday when it travels to Mercer College on Dec. 30 at 1 p.m.
