BOSSIER CITY, La. – The #1 Talladega College women's volleyball team captured the 2023 GCAC Women's Volleyball Championship with a 3-0 (25-21, 25-18, 25-16) victory over #3 Fisk University. The Tornadoes earned the GCAC automatic qualifier for the 2023 NAIA Women's Volleyball Tournament.
Talladega moves to 31-8 on the year while Fisk falls to 21-14 on the season.
Tied at 13 in the opening set, Fisk grabbed a 15-13 lead, but it did last long as Talladega tied things back up before using a 7-3 run to take a 22-18 lead. The Bulldogs chipped away at the lead to make it a 23-21 Tornado lead. Talladega took advantage of a Fisk attack error to go up 24-21 and then sealed the victory with a kill from
Kortni Johnson to take the first set.
Trailing 7-4 in the second set, Talladega used a 7-0 run to take an 11-4 lead. The Bulldogs strung together a 4-0 run to knot things up at 11. After that, both teams traded points not gaining any ground on each other to find themselves tied at 14. Talladega grabbed a 22-16 lead after an 8-2 run, which allowed the Tornadoes to hold on and win set 25-18 and take a 2-0 lead in the match.
Talladega jumped out to a 9-2 lead with hopes to close out the match in three sets. The Tornadoes never looked back as they kept building off their lead to go on to take the set 25-16 and win the match.
The Tornadoes as a team recorded 10 aces with
Dyani Steward finishing with a team-high three.
Zyaire Prettie Garrit led Talladega in kills with 12 while hitting .273 for the match. She tallied seven digs in the process.
Giovana Costerelli and
Dominique Madarang combined for 32 assists out of the team's 34 assists. Costerelli finished with a team-high 18 assists while Madarang recorded 14.
Briyith Echeverri tallied 21 digs for Talladega, which was a match-high for both teams.
