Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Dega Duels with Neighboring Jax State

JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – With the start of the 2023-23 regular season around the corner, the Talladega College men's basketball team paid a visit to Pete Mathews Coliseum Wednesday evening to face the Jacksonville State Gamecocks for an exhibition matchup. Jax State came away victorious, 78-49.

JaVonni Bickham and Corey Sands scored 14 points, each in unique ways. Sands finished the night 4-of-8 from the three-point line and connected on 2-of-3 free throws. Meanwhile, Bickham, who also had six rebounds, led the team as he went 7-for-8 from the free-throw line and 3-for-8 from the floor. D'Andre Boyd chipped in with team leads in nine rebounds and three assists.

Dega jumped to a 4-2 lead, with all four points coming from Bickham's free throws. KyKy Tandy hit a three for JSU to give the Gamecock their first lead, which extended to 11-4 at the 12:39 mark. However, the Tornadoes responded with a 7-0 run in two minutes, capped by a three from Sands to tie the matchup at 11-11.

Unfortunately, Jax State took control from here after Mason Nicholson made a putback layup to give the team a lead at 13-11 that the team extended throughout the game. The Gamecocks took a 32-18 advantage to the half and went on to win 78-49.

While tonight's contest will not count in the standings, the game does serve as a live opportunity against outside competition to prepare for the start regular season Saturday against Birmingham-Southern College.

Talladega College was picked to finish seventh in the coaches' preseason poll for the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference. Philander Smith University and Dillard University were chosen first and second at the top of the rankings.

Ethelbert Anum, who finished with six points, three rebounds and a steal against JSU, was named to the Preseason All-GCAC First Team.

The Tornadoes tipoff the regular season and host homecoming in the Dr. Billy C. Hawkins Student Activity Center against BSU at 2 p.m.
