Talladega Sweeps Tuskegee

TALLADEGA, Ala. – The Talladega College volleyball team posted a 3-0 victory over Tuskegee Thursday evening.

The Tornadoes improve to 21-8 on the season. Set scores were 25-19, 25-8, 25-20.

Zyaire Prettie Garri led the way with a match-high 10 kills. Kiana Polk tallied nine kills while Giovana Costarelli accounted for seven kills in the victory.

Dominique Madarang dished out a match-best 13 assist while Costarelli distributed 10 assists.

Madarang and Taquoia Rounds each served up a pair of aces while Costarelli and Briyith Echeverri also had an ace apiece.

Defensively, Echeverri and Prettie Garri posted eight digs apiece. Rounds added six digs while Costarelli had five.

Nedu Evans led the front line with three block assists. Josephine Gates, Costarelli and Mahalynn Sawyer each chipped in two block assists.

The Tornadoes slammed home 36 kills and hit .205 as a team.

Talladega jumped out to a 5-0 lead after a ball handling error by Tuskegee gave the squad the last point. Up 6-2, a service error gave the ball back to the home team. Two quick points by the Tornadoes pushed the margin to eight. The visitors pulled within three at 20-17 but Prettie Garri notched a kill. Leading 23-19, an attack error by Tuskegee and an ace by Madarang closed out the set.

The home squad jumped out to a 10-1 advantage in the second frame. Leading 14-4, Madarang posted a kill. Costarelli found Polk for a 12-point lead. Tuskegee pushed the advantage to 16 on another kill by Polk, making it 21-5 en route to the 25-8 victory.

The third set was closer, but the Tornadoes maintained complete control. Up 16-13, Prettie Garri registered a kill. A ball handling error by the visitors and an ace from Rounds made it 19-13.

Holding a 23-20 lead, back-to-back attack errors by Tuskegee ended the match at 25-20 for the sweep.

The Tornadoes return to action Tuesday, Oct. 17 when they play at Oakwood at 6 p.m.
