Women’s Hoops Falls on Road to Faulkner

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – A solid second quarter provided enough distance for the Faulkner University Lady Eagles as the Talladega College women's basketball team fell 72-58 on the road in Southern States Athletic Conference action.

After playing to a 20-20 tie during the first quarter, Faulkner's depth and the lack of available players for Dega showed as the Lady Eagles outscored the Tornadoes 16-7 in the frame to take a 36-27 lead to the half.

In the third, Talladega battled back to cut the lead to as low as four points thanks to a bucket from Je'Nya Wilder with 1:03 on the block to make the score 47-43. However, an old-school three-point play from Kinlee Varnell and free throws from Neely Johns pushed the Faulkner advantage to eight points as the Lady Eagles led 51-43 after three quarters.

Shamya Loman connected on a shot with 8:24 left in the fourth to cut the lead to 52-47, but the five-point deficit was as close as the Tornadoes would get as Faulkner kept the pressure to a 14-point, 72-58 win.

Highlighting the lack of depth for the Tornadoes tonight, Faulkner led 18-5 in bench points, 40-22 in points in the paint, 18-7 with points off turnovers, and 15-11 in second-chance points.

Loman led the way for Dega with 17 points, three assists and two rebounds; Wilder posted 10 points, eight rebounds, three assists and a pair of steals; and Brooklyn Talton added 10 points and nine rebounds.

The Tornadoes finished the game 39 percent (23-of-59) from the floor, 23.5 percent (4-of-17) at the three-point line, and 53.3 percent (8-of-15) in free throws.

Morgan Holland posted a double-double for the Lady Eagles with 15 points and 11 rebounds with an added six assists. Nequoia Adams finished as the leading scorer with 16 points, four assists, three rebounds, and two steals. Varnell added 11 points and six rebounds, while Evaiah Burrows reached double figures with 10 points.

Faulkner shot 43.5 percent (27-of-62) overall, 30 percent (6-of-20) from beyond the arc, and 92.3 percent (12-of-13) at the free throw line.

The road trip continues for Talladega College as the Tornadoes prepare to take on Blue Mountain (Miss.) Christian University on Dec. 10. Tip-off is set for noon.
