Dega Falls in Regular Season Finale to Faulkner

TALLADEGA, Ala. – The Talladega College volleyball team fell in a four-set battle to the Faulkner University Lady Eagles Saturday afternoon in the Hawkins Student Activity Center.

The Tornadoes fell to 13-17 overall and 5-13 in the Southern Sports Athletic Conference, while Faulkner moved to 22-12 overall and 10-8 in the SSAC.

Talladega won the opening set, 25-21, behind a significant .351 attack percentage in the opener before Faulkner responded to win the second game convincingly, 25-14. While the Eagles also took the final two sets, they were a battle as the visiting team claimed the third, 25-21, and the last set, 25-20, on the way to the win.

Zyaire-Prettie Garrit turned in a remarkable performance with a team-leading 16 kills alongside 10 digs for a double-double and maintained a .333 attack percentage. Nedu Evans added 11 kills, while Josephine Gates posted 10 kills. Gates also made her presence felt defensively with seven total blocks as she amassed three solos and four block assists.

Raven Clater passed 26 assists to keep the offense moving and Maloree Calzadillas continued her role in passing as she collected 19 assists.

As a team, Talladega College posted a .156 attack percentage against a .278 effort from the Lady Eagles.

Taquoia Rounds patrolled the back row with a match-leading 27 digs and Kenya Glenn tied with Garrit for second on the team with 10 digs.

Molly Presnell posted 17 kills and 12 digs for Faulkner, while Hannah Bryan added 10 kills and 11 digs.

With the regular season concluded, both teams will focus on the 2022 SSAC Volleyball Championship, presented by Dreamland BBQ.

Because the Tornadoes and Middle Georgia split their two head-to-head matchups and both won in five sets, the next tiebreaker is points won in head-to-head matchups. Talladega won 217 compared to 210 for the Knights.

Pool play will take place Thursday and Friday, with the top two from each pool advancing to the semifinals Friday evening. The championship match will take place Saturday at 2 pm CST.
